Each year at the state championship, the OSCF inducts students into the “Kathryn Rose Taylor Order of the Knight.”
Kathryn Rose Taylor (1955-2010) was a vibrant queen of chess, whose enthusiasm for the game, her sparkling personality, and her love of children led her to establish the Clatskanie chess club in 1999 with her son Michael. A few years later, she co-founded the Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation in 2005 with Amy Coughlin and Sudhakar Kudva. Under her leadership, both organizations thrived beyond any reasonable expectations. Kate loved chess, but she had a special passion for using chess to teach character and sportsmanship. It is in her honor that we name the OSCF’s highest award for sportsmanship.
For hundreds of years knights have been known for their honor, loyalty, perseverance, fearlessness and integrity. The OSCF is proud to induct the following students into the Kathryn Rose Taylor Order of the Knight for their courage, commitment, and upholding of high virtues and standards while participating in the timeless game of chess during the challenge of competition.
