December 17-18, 2011. Portland. The PCC Winter Open is a high-powered affair, similar to the Corvallis/Albany Open. Two days, long time controls, two sections (Open and U1800), and cash prizes ($650 total). USCF rated. Entry Fee: $35 (discount for club members). In addition, OCF/WCF membership required ($20/yr).
January 7, 2012. Tigard. Metzger Winter Classic. This year’s new features will include an All Girls section and a Team Competition in addition to the individual awards that will be handed out across all sections. CASH prizes for Open 1200+ G/60 with a possible split section of the top 8 players! This is an OSCF State Qualifier at low entry fee! All ages welcome! Tournament Flyer
January 7, 2012. Klamath Falls. Klamath Winter Tournaments. Open to all, from young novices to seasoned adults. Players are grouped into sixes by rating to play G/30 round robins for evenly matched sections. Entry fee: $10.
January 14, 2012. Eugene. 2012 Winter Carnival. Open to all K-12 players. Separate playing sections with different time-controls for different playing strengths, from the novice section at G/25 and the Elite 8 at G/60. The Eugene tournaments are famous for the beautiful trophies. In addition, the Elite offers cash awards. Entry fee: $25 ($20 for novices).
January 16, 2012. Corvallis. 2012 Corvallis MLK. Numerous small playing sections for evenly matched competition and good chances to win. High-Energy (G/25), Good Knight (G/30), Mighty Rook (G/40) sections: Trophies to top four finishers in each section. Awards for Best Notation, Best Handshake, Sportsmanship, and participation. The Power Section (G/45) is open to all (including adults) and features strong competition and generous cash awards. Entry fee: $15. Concessions on-site. Registration deadline: January 14. January 15, 2012. Gresham. Gresham Winter Tournament. Five-round, G/30 tournament in the library. Trophies to top three in each section. Free entry.
Repeating Events
January 16, 2012. Corvallis. The Corvallis MLK Day Chess Tournament is a large event with four sections divided into approximately eight sub-sections defined by rating and age. For example, the High-Energy section (novices) is normally split into several sub-sections, so beginners will play only against other beginners near their own age. The Power section (ratings over 1500 and/or age over 18) is likely to be the strongest scholastic tournament in Oregon this year.
Chess Odyssey Friday Night Quads
Every other Friday, 6:15-10:00 at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Portland. Four-player sections play G/30 round-robin. OSCF qualifier.
Portland Chess Club G/60
Once per month, 9:00-6:00 at the Portland Chess Club in SW Portland. Open to all USCF members, but almost all participants are rated above 1000 USCF. OSCF qualifier.
ChessWorks Sunday quads at the Portland Chess Club. Bi-weekly, G/30 quads. $15 entry fee. Registration/check-in 12:30.
