OSCF Member Clubs
The following clubs are considered members of OSCF. There are no membership dues and no size or affiliation requirements. Most clubs are sponsored by schools, but commercial enterprises, homeschool associations, coaching co-ops, adult chess clubs and others are welcome to join. The only requirement is that at least one function of the organization is specifically dedicated to providing training and playing opportunities to scholastic players (K-12) in Oregon. All member clubs must be primarily located in Oregon. These are general requirements; please see the OSCF bylaws and procedures for information concerning voting privileges and other details. The individual registering the club is considered the primary contact.

Arthur Academy – Portland

Ashbrook Independent School
Our school has had a chess club in the past, but the last couple of years we have had more students attending tournaments and interest in the program has grown. We meet once a week for an hour. Candalaria Elementary School, Salem
Candalaria chess club meets Fridays after school for one hour and are open to all K-5 students and all skill levels. New players will learn how to play and experienced players will learn new strategies and tactics. There will be time each week to practice the new skills and play some games all while having a great time!

Charles F. Tigard Elementary
Nearly 80 members strong, CFT Chess Club is run by volunteers and meets Wednesday after school. There are three levesl of instruction and plenty of opportunities for tournaments, including an all-inclusive end of year tournament for club members.

Cooper Mt. Elementary School
Cooper Mountain Chess club is one of the longest running elementary school chess clubs in Oregon. Located west of Portland in the Beaverton School District, the club has more than 40 active members from Cooper Mountain Elementary School, where the meetings are held, and also from neighborhood schools that do not have clubs. In recent history, the club has helped the school win two CFS state individual titles and two team titles, and a National Individual Title. The club meets once per week, once after school and once in the evening. Times are subject to change during the new school year. The club is run by parent vounteers. The Cooper Mountain Chess Club is one of the few USCF scholastic affiliates in Oregon, and is a founding affiliate of the OSCF.

Durham Elementary
The Durham School Chess Club began in the fall of 2004. We are open to all Durham School students K-5 who would like to learn and play chess. We meet on Monday afternoons from October until spring break and are 100% volunteer run!

Groner Elementary
Groner Grizzly Chess Club began in Fall, 2001. As a small rural school within Hillsboro School District (HSD), Groner elementary generally has 30 club members in it’s club each year. This means that nearly 15% of the school’s students are also chess players! Groner Elementary is also the location for the Regional Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program within HSD so we are privileged to have students from this program on our team as well. Groner Elementary co-sponsors chess tournaments in Hillsboro every year in December and January. The club meets on Wednesdays at the school from 2:15 pm – 3:30 pm from October through March.

Jacob Wismer Elementary
Jacob Wismer Chess Club started in Fall, 2002. In Spring 2005 and 2007, the club won the Chess for Success Oregon State Team Championship for elementary school. Located in the Betheny area, the club has more than 50 members from Jacob Wismer and neighboring schools. Some of them are active in the local chess tournaments and camps. Ridgewood
The Ridgewood chess club was founded in 1992 and joined the USCF in 1996. The club has its share of trophies, and alumni have done well at Cedar Park Middle School and Sunset High School. The focus of the club remains on the average player and the life and educational skills acquired, while learning, playing and attempting to master the game of chess.

Sunnyside Elementary School
Sunnyside Elementary is now in its Eleventh year. We have 75-100 players from grades 5 and 6. Players practice after school from 2:00 – 3:00 Tuesdays and Thursdays. The central purpose of our club is to introduce players to the game and develop sportsmanship as well as thinking skills using Chess as the medium.

Cedar Park Middle School
Cedar Park Chess Club was started in 2002 as an extension of the Ridgewood Elementary chess club, which was started in 1990 by Douglas Bayern, who still runs the Ridgewood club. Among more than 50 members there are three current Middle School state champions, one former State Champion, and a National Top 25 player. The Cedar Park chess team is the defending WA County Regional Champions, the OHSCTA B High School state champions, the OHSCTA Middle School state champions, and finished 4th in the country in both blitz and chess at the recent Supernationals. The team has also won numerous invitational tournaments in WA and OR, including both the Summer and Winter Olympics, the Cooper Mountain Invitational and the Ridgefield Classic, among others. Faculty advisors are Bart King and Kevin Quinn, and the chess team is coached by local master Mike Pendergast.
Chess club meets on Thursdays that school is in session at Cedar Park Middle School from 3:45 – 5:15 in room A-7. Visitors welcome, including strong elementary players and high school players, and well-behaved adults. Strong players may also get permission to attend group lessons taught by Mike Pendergast on Fridays, 3:45 – 5:30, again in room A-7. Cedar Ridge Middle School
The CRMS club was started by Mr. Steve Robinson several years ago. It had considerable success under his leadership, winning the past two regional championships. It’s located in Sandy and is now coached by Mr. Martin Bush, who teaches math at CRMS.

Coquille Middle School has chess club on Wednesdays during lunchtime. Also, Coquille Chess Club meets Tuesdays at the Downtown Studio at 74 E. 1st Street Coquille and is open to youth and adults of Coos County with recommended earliest age 4. 5:30 p.m. is beginning chess and 6:30 to 8 p.m. is moderate to advanced chess. Lessons are given during the moderate/advanced chess session for $5 per lesson.

Meadow Park Middle School (Beaverton)
We meet on Tuesdays at 2:15 to 3:45 for a portion of the students, and 3:45 to 4:45 for students on a later schedule. We’ve got a wide range of playing experience: some seasoned players with 6+ years of tournament playing and state titles under their belts, and some who have just played their first game here at the club! This year our club has run its first OSCF tournament successfully; we are planning another one in 2009 (hopefully a Monday holiday). While funds were available, the club attended lessons given by chess master Chuck Schulien. Parent volunteers are Zhunquin Wang and Linda Peake.

Club meets twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday. Students are 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. This is its second year of operation. Last year club members took second place in the Chess for Success regional tournament. They were invited to play in the Chess for Success State Championship on March 12.

We are a mostly new Chess Club that was formed in the 2009 to 2010 school year and are ongoing. We meet on Thursdays after school from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in the West Sylvan Middle School Library. It is organized by a parent volunteer, Elizabeth Sheiman, our coach is Tom Soals, and lessons are given frequently by Tony Hann. We are proudly supported by enthusiastic parents, PTA, and our prinicpal Cate Boyce!
Whitford Middle School
The Whitford Middle School serves 6-8 grade population in the eastern part of the Beaverton School District west of Portland. For the 2010-2011 school year, the club will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 3:40 to 5:00 pm. The club is coached by parent volunteer Rustam Kocher, and chess master Carl Haessler, with enthusiastic support from faculty (Joann Rees, Math Teacher) and administration (Matt Casteel, Principal).

Clackamas High School
The chess club meets on Tuesday and Thursday in room 203 (West Campus) after school until 5 PM. Activity buses are available for student transport back home. The club fields a team of students that competes in the Wednesday Portland Area League. The club also sends a team to the State Team tournament each year. We encourage competition to improve chess skills, however, all skill levels are certainly welcomed.

La Salle College Prep High School
LaSalle High School Chess Club meets on Fridays in the Library after school from 2:35 to 6:30pm. During the 2011 & 2012 Season we have 51 members in our Chess Club. We will be awarding Varsity Letters for playing chess to 33 members of our team. We have currently three teams competing in the Portland High School League on Wednesday at Lincoln High School. La Salle will enter 5 teams and two individuals, 27 students total in the 2012 Oregon High School Team Championships. LaSalle awards a Varsity Letter for those who participate in the League and The Oregon High School Team Championships. We also award Varsity Letters on an individual basis for those competing in OSCF qualifiers, 15 NWSRS rated games from April to April and OSCF State Championships. In addition La Salle gives Scholar Athlete Awards for those who maintained a 3.7 GPA or higher during the chess season.

Franciscan Montesorri Earth School / St Francis Academy
The Franciscan Montessori Earth School & Saint Francis Academy (FMES) is located at 14750 SE Clinton St, Portland, OR 97236. The FMES Chess Club meets on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 3:30-4:30. It was founded and run by Gladys Muñoz, a Lower Elementary Montessori Guide (teacher) and chess enthusiast. The club has active participation from grades K through 8th grade, supported by parent volunteers. The FMES Team placed 2nd in the 2005 CFS tournament and 1st in the K-4th Individual. We have had students finish 5th or 6th in 07, 08 OSCF State Championships. Two of our students are in the Fall 08 top ten list for their Grade.

ISB Chess Club

Kumon of Aloha
We are a chess club serving primarily students attending the Kumon Math & Reading Center of Aloha. Our students attend public K-12 schools in the Beaverton/Aloha areas. Parents and volunteers provide organizational and instructional support. Kumon students pay an annual membership of $25. Non-Kumon students pay $30.
