OES Aardvark Chess Tournament on April 4

CBBLogoSpots are filling up fast for the second annual OES Aardvark Chess Tournament on Saturday, April 4, at Oregon Episcopal School in SW Portland. This is one of the last OSCF qualifiers before Seaside, but space is limited!

Cash prizes for the top section, cool awards and plus score medals, little prizes for first-time tournament players, and raffle prizes! Proceeds to benefit the Children’s Book Bank and OSCF; children’s book donations are welcome! The absolute latest deadline to register is 10pm on Thursday, April 2 (early bird discount by 3/31); click here for more details and to register online.

Qualifier List Updated to 3-25; There’s still time!

We have updated the list of players who have qualified for Seaside.  Based on tournaments played and games rated through March 25, 407 players have qualified for the 10th Annual OSCF State Championship in Seaside, OR, on April 24-25.  We have also updated the list of players who only need an established rating to qualify, and the list of players who need just one more OSCF Qualifier tournament to qualify.  Remember, you have to qualify by April 15 in order to register for the event.  Remember to book your hotel room, too!

For coaches and parents who want to review the status of players at their school (encourage them to qualify and come!), we have posted an Excel spreadsheet listing the qualification status of all players who have played in an OSCF qualifying event.

There is still time to qualify, but it’s getting very tricky!!  For more details on qualifying, see this page; you need to (A) play in two qualifying tournaments, and (B) have an established NWSRS or USCF rating.

(A) There are four remaining tournaments posted on the calendar:

1) The Friday Night Quads run by Chess Odyssey on April 10.
2) The Bethel Friday Quads in the Eugene area on April 10;
3) The Spring Fling in Eugene on April 11.
4) The Harmon Memorial played at the Portland Chess Club on April 11 and 12.  Note that this event will be more appropriate for advanced players, and for various reasons it will probably not help you get to the necessary 15 rated games.

(B) If, after playing those tournaments, you don’t have 15 total NWSRS rated games, look at this post to figure out how to get up to at least 15; this might mean playing several rated “club” games at your school.  If you can’t figure out how to do this based on that just-linked post, contact us and we can help make it happen.

Last Call for T-shirt Designs for State Championship! Deadline March 10 at noon

Every year, our players walk away from Seaside with fantastic t-shirts produced on-site by our vendor, Northwest Designs.  Each year, the great art on the t-s2013 T-Shirt Designhirt is designed by one of our players.  We’re looking for the T-shirt design that will be featured on this year’s shirts.  If you have the selected design, you will win a free entry to the tournament ($35 value), a free T-shirt ($20-25 value), and $75!  If you’re the first runner up, your design will be featured on the front of the State Championship Program.  The deadline is coming quickly, though, so get your pencils, pens, and crayons sharpened, and your creative energies flowing!

The T-Shirt application form is here.

Parents or adults affiliated with tournament attendees may submit designs, but preference for designs will be given to NSWRS-rated players and their siblings (and the award remains the same)!  All entries will become property of OSCF and will not be returned.  The design must contain three phrases:  1) “10th Annual OSCF State Chess Championship” or (if the chess theme is obvious) “10th Annual OSCF State Championship”,  2) “April 24-25, 2015”, and 3) “Seaside, Oregon”.

NF 2014 WinnerThere is no limit on colors for submissions, although the final t-shirt design may be limited in production and altered as necessary for t-shirt production.  Shirts will be produced on demand, on site, and on the customer’s choice of shirt color.  All submissions must be submitted either by dropping them with an OSCF representative at an OSCF qualifying tournament (watch for the fliers this weekend and next), or electronically as an email attachment, along with this application, to oscfchess2011@gmail.com.

Deadline: Noon on March 10, 2015.
